1292) I don’t like it when FTMs call themselves faggots or fags. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not saying they can’t be gay. I’m a gay FTM. It just doesn’t seem fair to take a slur that gay cismen have had thrown at them for most of their lives and turn it into a label as a sort of ‘fuck you’ to heteronormative society. We’re not reappropriating these words when we use them; we’re belittling the struggles of those cismen who have been called fags and been spat upon, been bullied, been abused.
i hate the word fag personally, but i’m as much a gay man as anyone else, and regularly experience homophobia, so i feel okay reclaiming slurs that are used to oppress me. ‘fag’ is not just a slur for cis gay men. this post also assumes that no ‘ftms’ or trans men will have lived as male or had a gay male experience for most of their life which is problematic.
